dry as a bone inside

Barrel smelled awesome but was dry as a bone, not a drop of fluid or any moisture detected inside. Would love to update my feedback 10 months from now after understanding results of maple syrup placed in the barrel

Thanks for your order and for sharing your thoughts, Edward. We totally understand the surprise when a barrel arrives without visible moisture, so we wanted to share a bit more about what to expect.

We source our barrels directly from the distilleries right after they've been emptied. Gone are the days when you'd find gallons of bourbon sloshing inside—trust us, we remember when Heaven Hill barrels came with a bonus gallon or two! As technology improves and demand skyrockets (especially for those coveted limited-release bourbons), the visible wetness has diminished. Therefore, we don’t guarantee visible wetness because it would be a disservice to you.

When we say 'wet' barrels, we mean they're freshly emptied from the distillery, shipped straight to us with tight staves and bands, and packed with an intense aroma. We even pressure test the barrels upon arrival to ensure they’re still fillable—or we grade them for furniture if they're not. Rest assured, these barrels still have excellent juice locked in the staves, regardless of whether there's a visible shine or not.

We’d love to hear how your maple syrup aging turns out down the line, keep us posted!

One of the barrels has a cracked stave. I am a little concerned, but I won’t know until I fill with maple syrup. I’ll give 5 stars for now
