Important Info

Let’s talk barrel style when it comes to selecting your engraved barrel head type. No two barrels are ever alike, BUT, it’s important to understand there is a big variance between wine and bourbon barrels. Despite the difference in contents it previously held, there are major variations in quality worth talking about.

While both wine and whiskey styles are handcrafted from oak wood, wine barrels tend to be a much higher quality product. Specifically, the heads are flatter, they warp less as they dry overtime and they tend to be much cleaner with the rust free galvanized rings.

But don’t discount whiskey barrels too fast. They have a rich, authentic story that needs to be told. From a production standpoint, we do our best to maintain the integrity of the original barrel head. That means we screw the band to the head to hold the head staves together and add a 2×4” block of wood to reinforce the back to help prevent warping. All that being said, whiskey heads will rarely be completely flat and will have some variation in engraving finish.

The wine barrel head styles are deeper and slightly heavier than whiskey heads. They will include 2 galvanized bands screwed to the barrel lid, while the whiskey has one rust-colored ring per head. Additionally, the wine heads will be lightly stained and finished with poly and do not come with the 2×4” reinforcement board on the back.

BARREL SPECS

Highlights

  • Genuine Reclaimed California Wine Barrels
  • Authentic Retired Kentucky Bourbon Barrels
  • No two barrels ever the same

MAKE YOUR MARK

Originally handcrafted by a master cooper using the finest American, Hungarian or French Oak, each barrel is unique and packs plenty of character. Because barrel building is a custom process done by hand, no two barrels will ever be the same. The featured selections are not exact representations of the barrel you will receive as each denotes one-of-a-kind coloration, wood grain and engraving finish. Wine barrels WITH marks will come with a winery stamp, cooperage markings or possibly both! We try and select barrels with the flattest heads from our constantly rotating inventory. For barrels being used as a table top, the wine styles typically work best as they are generally more flat than the whiskey styles.

To produce the head style, the top of the barrel is cut off. The wine style includes two galvanized bands while the whiskey displays one rustic ring. All rings are attached to the barrel head with screws. Because the whiskey style is more variable, a 2×4” board is attached to the back for reinforcement. Wine barrel heads do not include the board.

Display Recommendations

We recommend displaying your barrel head indoors to help prevent weather aging. If using outdoors, keep in a shaded area.

Mounting

Because the end location for varies for each barrel head, we do not include mounting solutions. Three popular options include a mounting bracket (french cleat) sold in our Accessories, a wire, or displayed on the ground with no mounting solutions needed.

Barrel Care

Location. Location. Location.

All you need to worry about is where you are going to display this beauty.

Optional: If placing your barrel head outdoors you may wish to add a coat of tung oil once per year to brighten the wood grain.
